California Roof Types and Ages
California's homes are a little younger than the county's, with the biggest share from the 1980s and 1990s.
- 1994Median year built for homes in California
- 36%Of homes built from 1980 to 1999
- 27%Of homes built before 1980
- 63%Of occupied homes lived in by their owners
Asphalt shingles top more than 80 percent of American houses. Expect about 20 years from three-tab and about 30 from architectural shingles, or 40 to 80 from metal. The typical California home, built around 1994, would be on its second roof by now if the first was three-tab, and close to needing one if it was architectural.
