On the evening of February 25, 2017, the National Weather Service logged downed trees, power lines, shingle damage and dime-sized hail throughout the Town of Indian Head. It was the same storm that sent an EF-1 tornado from La Plata toward Waldorf.
Indian Head sits on a peninsula between the Potomac River and Mattawoman Creek. A weather station in town measured a 64 mph gust on February 7, 2026, and a station just southwest of town recorded 62 mph during a July 2023 storm.
The town grew outside the Navy's main gate during the war years, mostly to house base workers. The median Indian Head home dates to about 1980, roughly a decade older than the Charles County median.

The Navy set up its proving ground on Cornwallis Neck in 1890 and built a smokeless powder factory here in 1900. Indian Head was incorporated in 1920, and MD 210 was built as a defense access road in 1943 to serve the base, which is still one of the largest employers in Charles County. Today the town runs from Town Hall on Indian Head Highway and Village Green Park out to the boardwalk along the Potomac cliffs, with the Indian Head Rail Trail heading 13 miles east to White Plains.

Building permits inside town limits come from the Town of Indian Head through its Zoning Administrator, not from the county. The town's application asks for the contractor's MHIC number, and permits expire six months after they are issued.
Parts of Indian Head sit in the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area. The town's Critical Area permit form requires written approval from the Charles County Soil Conservation District before any permit is issued.
Electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits in town are handled by Planchek, the inspection agency contracted by the town and the county.
