Fascia. is the vertical board running along the roof edge, behind your gutters. It closes off the ends of the rafters and gives the gutters something to hang on. When it rots, gutters sag and pull away, and water starts getting behind everything.
Soffit. is the horizontal underside, the panel you see when you stand below the eave and look up. It closes the gap between the wall and the roof edge, keeps animals out of the attic, and, critically, is where your attic draws its intake air.
Why the ventilation part matters more than the trim. A ridge vent only works if air can get in at the bottom. When soffit intake is blocked, by insulation stuffed into the eaves, painted-over vents, or solid panels with no venting at all, the attic superheats in summer and traps moisture in winter. That cooks the shingles from underneath and takes years off a roof. It’s the single most common thing we find on roofs that aged early, and almost nobody connects it to the trim.
Wood, repaired or replaced. Right for historic homes and anywhere you want the original profile. It needs painting and it will need it again.
Aluminum wrapped wood. The wood board stays, wrapped in coil stock. Keeps the structure and ends the paint cycle, which is why most people here choose it.
Vinyl soffit. Low maintenance and available vented or solid. Vented panels are what you want across the eave, because that is where the intake air comes from.
The part that matters more than the material. If the board rotted, water was getting to it. We find out why first, because wrapping rot in aluminum just hides it.
We fix the leak, not just the wood. Replacing rotted fascia without correcting the drip edge or the gutter above it is the most common way this job gets done wrong, the new board looks great for three years and then rots exactly like the last one did, because nothing about the water changed. We’re roofers, so we’re already looking at the roof edge where the problem almost always starts, and the estimate covers both. The other thing we check is the part nobody asks about: attic intake. Blocked soffit venting cooks shingles from underneath and quietly takes years off a roof, and it’s invisible unless someone goes into the attic and looks. We do, and we’ll tell you what we find, which sometimes means telling you the trim is fine and the real issue is ventilation. Usually fascia. The hangers need solid wood to bite into, and if the board behind has rotted there’s nothing holding them. Rehanging gutters on bad fascia buys you a season at most.

Almost always water that should have left the roof somewhere else, missing or failed drip edge, gutters overflowing behind the board, an unflashed roof edge, or ice damming. Find that first or the new board goes the same way.
If your attic uses ridge or roof vents to exhaust, yes, those need intake at the eaves to work at all. Solid soffit belongs on porch ceilings and gable ends, not across the eaves.
They have to come down for the work anyway, so if they’re near the end it’s the cheapest time to replace them. See gutters and downspouts.
We can seal the gap and replace the damaged panels. If there’s an active nest we’ll ask you to have it removed first, we’re not licensed for wildlife removal and sealing an animal inside creates a worse problem.

Sagging gutters and rotted fascia are almost always the same problem, so this work usually pairs with gutters and downspouts.
