Fascia is the upright board along the edge of your roof, right behind the gutters. It caps the rafter tails and carries the full weight of the gutter system. When it rots, gutters droop and rain finds a path behind the trim and into the wall.
Soffit is the flat panel on the underside of the overhang. It seals the space between the wall and the roof edge, keeps squirrels and birds out of the attic, and is where your attic pulls in fresh air.
Airflow is the part most people miss. A ridge vent can only exhaust what the eaves let in. Insulation stuffed against the soffit, painted-over vents or solid panels choke that intake, so the attic bakes in July and holds moisture in January. Shingles age early from the underside, and it is one of the most common causes we find on roofs that wore out ahead of schedule.
Wood fascia, repaired or replaced. Best for older and historic homes where you want to keep the original profile. Expect to repaint it on a regular schedule.
Aluminum fascia wrap. Sound wood stays in place and gets covered with bent coil stock, ending the paint cycle while keeping the structure. Most of our customers pick this option.
Vinyl soffit. Comes vented or solid and needs very little upkeep. Vented panels belong along the eaves, since that is where your attic draws its air.
The material matters less than the fix. Wood rots because water reaches it, so we stop the water before any new trim goes on. Wrapping rotted wood in aluminum only hides the problem.
The most common way this job goes wrong is swapping the rotted fascia while the drip edge or gutter above it keeps dumping water on the new board. It looks sharp for a few seasons, then rots again. As roofers, we start at the roof edge, where the trouble almost always begins, and our estimate covers the cause and the trim together. We seal the opening and replace damaged panels. If a nest is active, we ask you to have it removed first. We are not licensed for wildlife removal, and sealing an animal inside the attic makes things worse.
